Gabon: the animal caravan… threatened

Gabon: presidential, legislative, local… the countdown has begun

  • Elections in Gabon: here we go again for two rounds!
  • In Gabon, why are we white like the CEO?

Both were selected by the Young African Leaders Initiative (Yali), a highly selective international competition created by former United States President Barack Obama. Training will continue in Dakar, but at different times: Cédric Kenfack Tiogo in 2016, still living in Cameroon, his country of origin, and Gabonese Noël Delamar Edzang in 2018.

It was in Gabon, where Cédric Kenfack Tiogo had now settled, that the two met, through the Yali Dakar alumni network. “It was through this network, which allowed me to integrate into Gabon, that I met Noël. And we became friends. »

Comics and mini-books

Aware of the questions environmental, namely the protection of biodiversity, Cédric Kenfack Tiogo and Noël Delamar Edzang decided, in 2020, to create a project together. His civic engagement has always targeted young people. Therefore, after a phase of information research, decide: your project, which they call “Caravan of the Green”, will focus on raising awareness among young Gabonese people about animal species threatened with extinction. To do this, a caravan will travel to the forest areas of Gabon, where the problem is particularly acute.

It is not difficult for any of them to find their place in this project that they are fine-tuning day after day. Your skills and experiences complement each other. Cédric Kenfack Tiogo, cartoonist, graphic designer and 2D animator, runs the company J2M Productions. Specializing in events and artist agency, she takes the initiative – enough to reassure her partners. Noël Delamar Edzang, project management coach, who worked at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Gabon from 2012 to 2017, takes care of the financial matters. The NGO Appli, dedicated to training and advising young entrepreneurs, where it is responsible for public relations, will help to diversify the project's sources of financing.

Raising awareness among young people will be done with the help of drawings, small texts presenting the animals and telling your story. “Our supports are large panels, t-shirts, cards and cards featuring the most endangered animals. We also create comic books and minibooks, with illustrated texts or in the form of questions and answers and coloring pages. We are in the prototype and exemplary phase”, explains Cédric Kenfack Tiogo.

Stages in Oyem, Lambarene and Gamba

The search for partners (financial, technical and logistical support) is underway. The two partners have already obtained agreement from WWF Gabon. The Gabon National Parks Agency (ANPN) provides animal information and statistics as well as practical information. The forestry, oil and telecommunications companies approached confirm their agreement after receiving the information necessary for their decision making. The two partners are working on it.

Detailed step-by-step route and budgeted to the nearest kilometer, equipment and logistics needs, production of support... The budget, which will include various sponsorship formats (money, services, etc.), is in the preparation phase. The caravan should begin by the end of the year. For now, three locations have been chosen to host the Green Caravan: Oyem (Woleu-Ntem), Lambaréné (Moyen-Ogooué) and Gamba (Ogooué-maritime). a list that to develop lie down.
